And that’s not all folks – in addition to Golden-winged Laughingthrush, the site also supports good numbers of two range-restricted near-endemics, Black-crowned Barwing and Indochinese Fulvetta, both species discovered in 1990s again by the intrepid Mr Eames and his Birdlife team. The beautiful and elusive Golden-winged Laughingthrush, first discovered in 1996 by Jonathan C. Eames and colleagues from Birdlife International, has always been tantalizingly out of reach to birders due to its only known site at Ngoc Linh National Park being closed to visitors. Now however with new road construction in the vicinity of Ngoc Linh opening up previously inaccessible areas of forest, Vietnam Birding has discovered a fabulous new site for this most wanted of Vietnamese endemics.

Accessing the area is not the most comfortable of journeys with the less than 30 km from the highway to the site taking around three hours on bone-shaking, pot-holed roads but all the discomfort is quickly forgotten when you have a beauty like the Golden-winged Laughingthrush waiting for you at the end.

To incorporate this fantastic new site into a tour Vietnam Birding has developed an exciting new 18-day itinerary called ‘The Best of Vietnam’s Endemic Birds’ covering all the best locations for endemics and near-endemics in Southern and Central Vietnam. To see this itinerary click here:
